Simulating end-user mobile service experience: data - voice - sms

Too often mobile operators are flying blind in respect to end-user experience of the mobile phone network. Currently they may monitor BTS station data such as antenna, signal strength, etc... However what is not being done is monitoring the service itself. Mobile services being unavailable immediately result in a loss of revenue.

ServersCheck has developed a unique concept within its monitoring platform that simulates end-user interactions with the mobile operator. Through the BTS Monitoring Appliance, ServersCheck tests following services:
  • Voice calls: can calls be completed to the number provided - this allows to test the basic voice calling capability as well as interconnectivity with other operators by calling numbers outside the own network

  • SMS: the unit will try to send a SMS and will time how long it takes for the SMS to be received. By monitoring the complete cycle, one has a complete view of the text messaging service.

  • 2G / 3G DATA: the unit will monitor data connectivity from end-user perspective. More info.

  • How does it work?

This diagram details how the ServersCheck BTS Monitoring Appliance performs end-user simulation tasks. Through the connected modem(s) the appliance will at regular intervals try to make a voice call. For testing the SMS part, it sends SMS messages to itself. For data connections it downloads a predefined URL and measure the download speed. Same goes for uploading.

To do end-user simulation, ServersCheck uses standard industry dongles from manufacturers like Huawei. When a network gets upgraded, the only change to the ServersCheck solution is the upgrade of the dongles. 2G/3G/4G it all works.

When a service issue is detected ServersCheck will immediately generate an alert over the IP network to the NOC. When the IP network is down, ServersCheck will switch through the competitor's network using its patented approach.

    Required components

The table below outlines the required components for performing end-user simulation.

    End-User Simulation Package
    ServersCheck BTS Monitoring Appliance
Huawei E180v or E1662 voice capable modem for end user simulation.
Second modem required for alerting via SMS

Other modems such as from ZTE and Falcom may work too. Please contact us for modem hardware certification.
